Course Purpose

This course explains the theory, function, design, methods of heat transfer and safety issues when working on or maintaining combustion equipment.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Explain the flame triangle
  • Describe the relationship between heat, temperature, and specific heat
  • List and discuss the different methods of heat transfer
  • Identify and discuss the by-products of combustion
  • Identify and describe the importance of stoichiometric conditions
  • Describe the construction of basic combustion systems
  • Describe the safety equipment associated with a combustion system
  • Design a basic fuel train for a combustion system given components

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for mechanical technicians.

None

Technology Requirements

All technology is provided for student use in the classroom by Rockwell Automation. It is not necessary for students to bring any technology with them when attending this course.

Hands-on Practice

Throughout this course, you will have the opportunity to practice the skills you have learned through a variety of hands-on exercises. These exercises focus on the skills introduced in each lesson.

You will also have the opportunity to combine and practice groups of key skills by completing multiple integrated practices during the course.

Day 1

  • Explaining the theory of combustion
  • Breaking down flame structure
  • Correlating the relationship between heat, temperature, and specific heat
  • Applying the concept of fuel/air ratio
  • Measuring percent CO2, O2, and combustibles
  • Listing general types of burners

Day 2

  • Listing the various control valves, blowers, regulators, and switches associated with various burners
  • Differentiating the three modes of heat transfer
  • Stating the heat transfer rates
  • Explaining coal preheating
  • Review
  • Exam
