Building More Resilient Mining Operations by Reducing Arc Flash Risk

Mining operations run on power. Across crushing, conveying, hoisting, pumping, ventilation and mineral processing, electrical infrastructure keeps production moving and helps connect the assets, systems and people that make safe, efficient operations possible.

But the same electrical systems that support higher productivity also introduce risk, especially in environments shaped by dust, moisture, vibration, remote locations, confined spaces and constant pressure to maximize uptime.

Arc flash is one of the risks mining companies cannot afford to treat as a narrow compliance issue. It is a safety, reliability and operational continuity challenge that can affect people, assets and production at the same time.

Why Arc Flash Risk Is Different in Mining

An arc flash occurs when electrical energy is released through the air between conductors or from a conductor to ground. The event can generate intense heat, light, pressure, smoke and molten material, creating serious hazards for workers near energized equipment.

In a mine, those hazards can be amplified by the realities of the site. Conductive dust can enter equipment. Moisture and corrosive conditions can degrade insulation and connections. Heavy vibration and equipment movement can loosen components. Temporary power setups, mobile assets and tight electrical rooms can make exposure harder to control.

The impact can move quickly from a safety event to a production event. A fault can damage electrical equipment, take a critical asset offline, delay maintenance work and create unplanned downtime at the exact point in the process where reliability matters most.

That is why reducing arc flash risk in mining is about more than helping prevent an incident. It is about helping protect workers, maintain throughput and keep production-critical systems available in difficult operating conditions.

Safety and Production Performance Are Connected

Mining leaders are under constant pressure to improve safety while increasing availability, throughput and cost discipline. These priorities are not separate. They depend on one another.

A serious electrical incident can interrupt a maintenance window, reduce equipment availability, slow production and require investigation or replacement work before operations can return to normal. In mining, where one constrained asset can affect the broader value chain, the business impact can extend well beyond the electrical room.

A stronger electrical safety strategy helps address that connection. It supports safer work while also improving the reliability of the systems that move material, support processing and keep production running.

For modern mines, this is part of operational excellence: identifying risk earlier, reducing exposure where possible and designing systems that can support both safety and performance in the field.

Moving From Compliance to Risk Reduction

Compliance remains the starting point. Standards such as NFPA 70E and CSA Z462 help define safe work practices, while electrical codes and maintenance standards guide how equipment should be installed, maintained and inspected.

But a mining operation needs more than a standards checklist. It needs a practical view of where hazards exist, how site conditions affect equipment over time and how workers interact with energized systems during operation, troubleshooting and maintenance.

That means using arc flash risk assessments, short-circuit and incident energy studies, clear procedures, proper labeling, workforce training, preventive maintenance and personal protective equipment selected for the task and hazard level.

It also means looking upstream for ways to reduce exposure before a task begins. The most effective safety programs combine administrative controls, qualified workers and engineering controls that help lower risk at the source.

Using Engineering Controls to Reduce Exposure

Engineering controls are especially important in mining because not every risk can be managed through procedures or PPE alone. Arc-resistant equipment is one way to help reduce exposure in higher-risk electrical applications.

Arc-resistant equipment is designed to help contain and redirect the energy from an internal arcing fault, helping protect personnel when the equipment is properly specified, installed, maintained and operated according to its requirements.

That protection matters in mines, where electrical rooms, substations and motor control equipment may be located near production areas, maintenance routes or remote assets that are costly to access and difficult to take offline.

Low- and medium-voltage motor control centers with arc-resistant capabilities can support a broader safety strategy by helping reduce exposure during normal tasks and strengthening the link between worker protection, asset reliability and production continuity.

Installation and Maintenance Cannot Be an Afterthought

Arc-resistant equipment only performs as intended when the complete system is specified, installed and maintained correctly. Even a small installation issue can compromise the arc-resistant integrity of the equipment.

For mining projects, that makes early planning critical. Installation requirements should be defined during the bid process; contractors should understand the manufacturer’s requirements and the final installation should be reviewed before the equipment is relied on as part of the safety strategy.

Maintenance matters just as much. Dust, moisture, corrosion and vibration can change equipment condition over time, making inspection, documentation and preventive maintenance essential to sustaining protection and performance.

When electrical safety is treated as an ongoing operational discipline, mines are better positioned to reduce risk, protect people and keep production-critical assets available.

Building More Resilient Mining Operations

Modern mining operations are becoming more connected, more automated and more dependent on reliable electrical infrastructure. That creates an opportunity to think differently about electrical safety, not as a separate requirement, but as part of how resilient operations are designed and sustained.

By combining risk assessments, trained workers, preventive maintenance, documented procedures and appropriate engineering controls, mining companies can help create safer environments while supporting uptime, reliability and long-term operating performance.

Now is the time for mining companies to evaluate where arc flash exposure exists across their operations, confirm that electrical safety programs reflect current standards and site realities, and identify where engineering controls can help reduce risk at the source.

By taking a proactive approach, mines can better protect people, safeguard critical assets and reduce the likelihood that an electrical event becomes a broader production disruption. In mining, resilience is not only measured by how quickly an operation recovers. It is also measured by how well it reduces risk before disruption occurs.
