Computer-Based Training
Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I try out Rockwell Automation computer-based training to see if it is right for me?
Yes. We offer demos for all of our computer-based training courses. To download a demo, click here.
- How do I know if Rockwell Automation computer-based training is the right solution for my employees?
Computer-based training is the right solution if your priorities match the following:
- Keep training local at your own facility
- Complete training anytime without a live instructor and without an Internet connection
- Deliver training at one location to several employees, with or without the need to track student progress
- Provide unlimited access to training opportunities
- What are the two types of RSTrainer computer-based training packages and what is the difference?
Two purchasing options are available with RSTrainer computer-based training:
Single-User Option: The RSTrainer standard version, offers a single-user license and a single software activation. This computer-based training product is designed so that one person can use the program on one computer at one time. With this option, the RSTrainer software can be installed and activated on only one computer and not on a network.
Multi-User Option: Referred to as RSTrainer Enterprise Edition, this version can be installed on a network and shared concurrently with multiple users. RSTrainer Enterprise Edition ships with five user licenses and software activation that permits five users to concurrently access and use the RSTrainer software at any given time. This computer-based training product is meant to be installed and activated on a network server and it is designed to manage multiple users over a network. RSTrainer Enterprise Edition is ideal for companies with a large number of people to train.
For more than five concurrent users of the software, multiple copies of the RSTrainer Enterprise Edition software must be purchased.
- For a single user license, can I install and use my computer-based training software on more than one computer?
The Rockwell Software End User License Agreement (EULA) for a single installation stipulates that an end user can install and use the computer-based training software on one computer only; however, if you have purchased a dongle and loaded the activation on the dongle, you may install the software on more than one computer and activate it using the dongle. Dongles may be purchased through Rockwell Automation, part # 9509-USBDONG.
- What is RSTrainer Enterprise Edition?
RSTrainer Enterprise Edition products are designed to be installed on and managed off a network server. Companies that need the flexibility to train multiple users at one time can do so over a corporate network with RSTrainer Enterprise Edition products. This product ships with five “concurrent” user licenses and software activation that permits five users to concurrently access and use the RSTrainer software at any given time. To allow more than five concurrent users of the software, you must purchase multiple copies of the RSTrainer Enterprise Edition software.
- Can I purchase RSTrainer Enterprise Edition with only one installation instead of the standard five?
No. RSTrainer Enterprise Edition is a multi-user solution; therefore, it ships with five user licenses. For a single-user license, customers should order the standard RSTrainer product that ships with one user license.
- Can I upgrade my standard RSTrainer version for Enterprise Edition?
There is no upgrade program for RSTrainer software. If you want to purchase the Enterprise Edition, contact your local Allen-Bradley Distributor.
- Can RSTrainer Enterprise Edition products be installed on Citrix and Linux servers?
All RSTrainer Enterprise Edition products are designed for Windows platform servers. Other servers have not been tested and Rockwell Automation cannot guarantee that they will work on any other type of server.
- Can any number of employees at my facility use the computer-based training software?
This depends on the type and number of user licenses you purchased. For the standard RSTrainer single-user license, the Rockwell Software End User License Agreement (EULA) does not stipulate the number of users who are permitted to use the RSTrainer software on one machine. For the RSTrainer Enterprise Edition, multi-user license, the EULA states that the number of users cannot exceed the number of licenses purchased.
- What type of activation is required to use my RSTrainer product?
FactoryTalk is the software-based activation system for all new and updated RSTrainer products, including Enterprise Edition. FactoryTalk is installed at the time you install your RSTrainer product. Depending on the type of RSTrainer product you purchased (i.e., standard or Enterprise Edition), one of the following activation methods is required to use the RSTrainer product:
Node-Locked Activation: Activation is locked to a single computer and not a network server. Standard RSTrainer products use this type of activation and only one user can access the training on one machine at one time.
Concurrent Activation: Activation is locked to an activation server and the server can “loan” activations to other computers. RSTrainer Enterprise Edition products use this type of activation and it includes five licenses and activations so that five people can concurrently use the training at one time.
- How can I obtain activation files?
You can obtain activation files through the following means:
- Internet web site http://licensing.software.rockwell.com/
- Activation wizard included on the RSTrainer CD-ROMS (requires an Internet connection)
- How can I track individuals who complete RSTrainer computer-based training courses and obtain their scores from the Check Knowledge assessments?
RSTrainer Student Manager is a student tracking and reporting utility for use with RSTrainer computer-based training courses. The Student Manager program can be used to manage any number of RSTrainer courses and any number of students. It can also be used to maintain records of student progress, including specific lessons viewed, Check Knowledge assessment scores, and overall percentage of completion.
RSTrainer Student Manager is a separate product that is purchased and used in conjunction with the RSTrainer courses: catalog number 9393-RSTSMGR.
- Can I use RSTrainer Student Manager with both the standard and Enterprise Edition RSTrainer products?
Yes. RSTrainer Student Manager can be installed on a single computer or on a network and it is compatible with both the standard and Enterprise Edition RSTrainer products. If you have older versions of RSTrainer products that use EVRSI activation, it will still work.
- What is RSCompanion for SLC 500 and MicroLogix Processors?
This is not an RSTrainer product. It is an online interactive tool that saves you valuable time when developing and documenting ladder logic programs, as well as installing and commissioning hardware. Various procedures, wizards, and detailed audio and visual reference information is provided to guide you through these tasks. For more information about this product, click one of these links:
