Automation Fair 2011
Metals & Mining Industry Forum
Wednesday, November 16 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM Room W194
Globalization, heightened competition, higher production requirements and increasingly stringent environmental standards are placing enormous pressure to optimize operations. Through our industry expertise we can help meet these challenges, turn automation technology into a competitive advantage and help reduce your customer's energy costs through advanced regulatory control. Increase uptime through power and automation integration that provides built-in device-level diagnostics and communications.
At this forum, mining industry professionals will provide an overview of industry trends in risk mitigation, remote monitoring capabilities and benefits, and information enablement through the use of Rockwell Automation mining technology.
You Will Learn
- How the MMC mining library creates a control philosophy which ensures that the operator or manager of a large continuous process is not flooded by unnecessary information, allowing them to concentrate on plant performance and process optimization
- The steps and benefits from migrating to a fully automated, single platform process control system
- How compliance data can be pulled from multiple disparate data resources to effectively provide EPA compliance requirements

Agenda
- Automation Solutions for Material Haulage Systems
Patrick Fantin, PEng | Technical Vice President, Rail-Veyor Technologies Global Inc.
Rail-Veyor® is an energy efficient, material haulage alternative that provides solutions to a broad range of customers, including mining, aggregates and energy sectors. This presentation will address the alternative solutions available to conventional rail haulage, truck and conveyor systems by means of a low capital and operating cost system. The Rail-Veyor solution cars are constructed with semi-cylindrical troughs that are spanned by flexible flaps to prevent leakage and form an open trough capable of continuous movement along a light rail track. Automation solutions consist of Drive stations that are distributed along the rail line and consist of motor/gearbox/tire assemblies, powered by a variable frequency drive and controlled by PLCs that communicate over an Ethernet backbone. The Rail-Veyor® system will operate at grades up to 20%, is capable of turning within a 30m radius, is energy efficient, has a light footprint and is fully automated.
- Understand the Rockwell Automation Mining Process Solution
Hein Hiestermann | Business Manager for Global Solutions, Rockwell Automation South Africa
Rockwell Automation offers customers mining solutions, ranging from power and energy systems, site-wide automation and process control systems. This session will review Rockwell Automation proven "Mining" process solution, focusing on mitigating customer risk. The use of Standardized modules developed for the mining industry provides our mining customers with a robust solution that meets their performance needs. The Rockwell Automation comprehensive Mining solution reduces the amount of extra engineered coding, reducing start-up time and maintenance support cost. During this session we will discuss our Program management model, Documentation control, and OEM Coordination.
- Model Predictive Control and Optimization
Quin Dennis | Global Process Technology Consultant, Rockwell Automation
Rockwell Automation introduced model predictive control in the minerals industry 11 years ago and implements grinding and pyroprocessing solutions worldwide. These are challenging from a control perspective partly due to disturbances from the raw materials, complex interactions between process variables and the time delays involved. Solutions have been developed for ball and roller mills, rotary kilns, dryers and furnaces in mineral processing. Combining model predictive control technology and industry expertise delivers improved process performance and real time optimization. Multiple objectives of throughput, energy use and product consistency are achieved simultaneously while respecting process constraints and product quality.
